Urology

Urology generally refers to the field of medicine that focuses on the urinary tracts of both males and females, and on the reproductive system of males. Analogous to other medical specialties, today most surgical procedures in urology are carried out endoscopically.

The term endo-urology involves the use of small flexible and rigid endoscopes which are passed through the urethra to inspect the lining of the urinary tract from kidney to bladder. The majority of endo-urologic procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis.

The most recent advance in urology is uro-gynaecology. This specialty focuses on the care for women with pelvic floor dysfunction, which includes but is not limited to, urinary incontinence, urogenital prolapse, chronic pelvic or bladder pain, overactive bladder and sexual dysfunction.
